Eco-friendly paper has moved from a nice-to-have to a standard procurement requirement. Customers, auditors and tender documents increasingly ask where your paper comes from. The challenge is telling a credible claim from vague green marketing, and that is where certification such as FSC comes in.

What makes paper eco-friendly?
There is no single definition, but credible eco-friendly paper usually meets one or more of these tests:
- Responsibly sourced fibre from forests managed to a recognised, independently audited standard.
- Recycled content, which reduces demand for new fibre.
- Cleaner processing, such as elemental chlorine-free (ECF) or totally chlorine-free (TCF) bleaching.
- Durability, such as acid-free paper that lasts longer in archives and does not need reprinting.
What FSC certification means
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-profit organisation that sets standards for responsible forest management. FSC certification has two parts. Forest management certification confirms that a forest is managed to FSC rules. Chain of custody certification tracks the fibre through every company that processes or trades it, so the claim on the final product can be trusted.
The three FSC labels
- FSC 100%: all the fibre comes from FSC-certified forests.
- FSC Recycled: all the fibre is recycled material.
- FSC Mix: a combination of certified, recycled and controlled-wood fibre.
You can read the official descriptions on the FSC labels page. PEFC is another widely used forest certification scheme with a similar chain-of-custody approach.
Recycled and acid-free eco-friendly paper
Modern recycled paper prints well in laser and inkjet printers, and many grades now match virgin-fibre paper on smoothness. Recycled sheets can be slightly less bright, so check the brightness rating if you print colour-critical work. Acid-free paper is made with an alkaline buffer that slows yellowing and brittleness, which makes it a good choice for contracts, records and anything that must be archived.
How to verify an eco-friendly paper claim
- Ask the supplier for its chain-of-custody certificate number, not just a logo on a brochure.
- Check that the certificate is valid and covers the product type you are buying, using the certification body’s public database.
- Make sure the claim appears on the invoice or delivery documents, which is what auditors check.
- For recycled paper, ask for the percentage of recycled content.
The business case for sustainable sourcing
Responsibly sourced paper supports your brand and your customers’ reporting. Many public-sector and corporate tenders now include environmental criteria, and certified paper helps you qualify. It also prepares you for tighter regulation; for example, EU rules on deforestation-free products are increasing scrutiny of wood-based supply chains. Because eco-friendly grades are now priced close to conventional paper, switching rarely carries a large cost premium.
