Bond Paper vs Copy Paper: What Is the Difference?

“Bond paper” and “copy paper” are often used as if they meant the same thing, and in some markets they do. In others, bond paper means something more specific. Because suppliers use the words differently, it helps to understand bond paper vs copy paper before you place an order.

What bond paper means

The name comes from paper made to be durable enough for bonds, contracts and other important documents. Traditionally, bond paper is a stronger, crisper sheet, often with some cotton content, and its surface takes ink from a pen or a printer cleanly. In the United States trade, weight is quoted in pounds: 20 lb bond is roughly 75 GSM and 24 lb bond is roughly 90 GSM. In some Asian markets, including the Philippines, “bond paper” is simply the everyday name for the paper used in offices and schools, sold in sizes such as short (Letter), A4 and long.

What copy paper means

Copy paper is general-purpose office paper made for photocopiers and for laser and inkjet printers. It is usually between 70 and 80 GSM and uncoated, and it is made to feed quickly through machines, with low dust, consistent cutting and stable moisture content. It is the paper most offices buy by the carton for everyday printing.

Which one should you use?

  • Everyday printing, drafts and internal documents: copy paper is the practical, economical choice.
  • Letterheads, contracts, certificates and CVs: a heavier, crisper bond-type sheet gives a better first impression.
  • Writing by hand or with a pen: a smooth bond sheet handles ink well.

How to avoid confusion when you order

Because the name means different things in different places, describe the paper rather than relying on the label. Give the size (A4, Letter, Legal or A3), the weight in GSM, the brightness you need, and whether the paper will run through a high-speed copier. Our guides to A4, Letter and Legal paper sizes and to choosing between 70, 75 and 80 GSM cover the first two.

Bond paper vs copy paper: quick answers

Is bond paper heavier than copy paper?

Often, but not always. In many markets “bond” describes a sturdier writing and printing paper of around 80 to 100 GSM, while standard copy paper is 70 to 80 GSM. In other markets, everyday office paper is simply called bond. Always compare the GSM on the specification rather than the name.

Where does the name bond paper come from?

The name dates back to paper made for government bonds and certificates, which had to be durable and resist handling. Today the word describes a strong, uncoated paper for letters, forms and documents, as described in the history of bond paper.

Can bond paper go through a copier or laser printer?

Yes, as long as the weight is within the tray’s rated range. Heavier bond grades may need the printer’s paper type set to “heavy” or “bond” so the fuser runs at the right temperature.

How do I avoid getting the wrong paper in a bulk order?

Specify the size, GSM, brightness and quantity in your enquiry instead of relying on the word bond or copy. Ask for a sample ream if you are switching grades.
